About This Accreditation
IRTEC Heavy Goods Vehicle Inspection Technician Accreditation
The IRTEC Heavy Goods Vehicle Inspection Technician Accreditation is a nationally recognised accreditation for experienced technicians responsible for the inspection of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). It assesses the practical skills and underpinning knowledge required to carry out thorough vehicle inspections and identify defects in line with industry and regulatory standards.
The accreditation is designed to demonstrate an inspection technician’s competence and provide independent recognition of their ability to inspect HGVs to the required standard.
Upon successful completion, technicians receive an IRTEC licence valid for five years, a certificate and are listed on the IRTEC Technicians Register.

Eligibility Requirements
To undertake the IRTEC Heavy Goods Vehicle Inspection Technician accreditation, candidates must meet one of the following minimum entry requirements:
- At least three years’ relevant industrial experience
- or
- A Level 3 S/NVQ or equivalent qualification, plus at least one year’s experience in a relevant industrial environment
- Candidates should be able to work unsupervised and ideally be in full-time employment, ensuring they are familiar with the skills, knowledge and techniques associated with vehicle inspection.

Option 1: Accreditation Only
Designed for experienced, confident technicians who do not require additional training before assessment.
Includes the online knowledge test and practical assessment, completed on-site.
Option 2: Accreditation with Classroom Training
Ideal for experienced technicians who would benefit from additional theoretical preparation before completing the IRTEC assessments.
Includes one day of classroom training followed by the online knowledge test and practical assessment on-site.
Option 3: Accreditation with Classroom and Practical Training
Designed for experienced technicians who would benefit from both theoretical preparation and hands-on practical training before completing the IRTEC assessments.
Includes one day of classroom training and one day of practical workshop training, followed by the online knowledge test and practical assessment on-site.

Accreditation Content Overview
This accreditation assesses the skills and knowledge required to inspect heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 7,500kg and identify defects in accordance with relevant inspection standards and requirements.
