Pro-Tech provides independent MOT quality management and QC support to MOT testing stations across the UK, helping Authorised Examiners and MOT managers maintain standards, support their testers and address issues before they become bigger problems.

Frequently Asked Questions About MOT Quality Management
How often should MOT QC checks be carried out?
There is no single QC frequency that is appropriate for every MOT testing station or tester. Your quality management arrangements should be proportionate and take account of factors such as tester experience, performance, test quality information and any identified concerns or risks. We can help you determine an appropriate approach and ensure your QC activity forms part of an effective wider quality management system.
Who should carry out an MOT QC check?
An MOT QC check should be carried out by a live MOT tester with the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to properly assess testing standards. Holding tester status alone does not necessarily demonstrate that someone has the experience or competence required to provide effective quality assurance.
If you use an independent provider, ask about the person who will actually carry out your QC checks. What is their MOT testing experience? What relevant qualifications and industry experience do they hold? How well do they understand current DVSA requirements and quality management?
A QC check should provide meaningful assurance and identify opportunities for improvement — not simply produce another completed piece of paperwork.
Check the credentials of the person you are trusting to assess your MOT testers and protect your MOT authorisation.
Are MOT QC checks enough to manage MOT quality?
No. QC checks are an important part of MOT quality management, but they should not be treated as the entire quality management process. Effective quality management should also consider tester performance, test quality information, training and competence, procedures, equipment, identified risks and any corrective action required.
The aim should be to identify where something may be going wrong, understand why, take appropriate action and demonstrate what has been done to prevent the issue happening again — rather than simply completing a QC check to tick a box.
What should be recorded following an MOT QC check?
The outcome of each QC check should be clearly recorded, including any differences or concerns identified, discussions with the tester and any agreed actions. Where action is required, there should also be evidence that it has been followed through and, where appropriate, reviewed to confirm that the issue has been addressed.
Good records should demonstrate an active quality management process – not simply that a QC check took place.
What should happen if an MOT QC check identifies a problem?
Where a QC check identifies a concern, the response should be proportionate to the issue identified. This may include discussing the finding with the tester, additional training or coaching, reviewing procedures, increasing the frequency of QC checks or carrying out further monitoring.
Most importantly, the action taken should be recorded and followed up. Identifying a problem is only the first step – effective quality management should demonstrate what was done about it and whether the action taken was effective.
I’m the only MOT tester at my garage – do I need an independent provider to carry out my QC?
No. If you are the only MOT tester at your site, you do not automatically need to employ an independent provider to manage your MOT quality control. DVSA allows single-tester sites to manage their own quality assurance, provided the requirements set out in the MOT Testing Guide are followed.
This means you still need an effective quality management process, including reviewing your own testing standards and performance, using available test quality information, identifying any areas of concern and keeping appropriate records of the checks undertaken and any actions taken.
Some single-tester sites choose to use an independent provider for additional assurance and an objective review of their testing standards, but this is a choice rather than a requirement.
