Let’s be honest – even the best MOT Testers slip up from time to time.
At Pro-Tech, we see it every week: testers working flat out, doing their best, but still getting caught out by simple mistakes that could have been avoided with the right habits (and the right support).
The truth is, when you’re dealing with road safety, DVSA expectations, and your personal testing licence, mistakes aren’t just inconvenient – they can be costly.
But they’re also avoidable. You just need the right mindset, the right tools… and sometimes, the right people behind you.
Below are the mistakes we see most often and how to avoid them, with support from Pro-Tech along the way

1. Forgetting to Use the Inspection Manual
At Pro-Tech, we’re constantly reminding testers: the Inspection Manual isn’t just a reference when you’re stuck – it’s meant to be used every single day.
We regularly support testers who’ve received warnings or disciplinary action simply because they relied on memory for something that took DVSA two pages to explain.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
During our training and MOT Assist support calls, we walk testers through how to use the Manual properly, how to search it quickly, and how to interpret those tricky “grey areas” the DVSA loves so much.
✔ Pro-Tech tip: Bookmark the Inspection Manual, and attach the link next to the defect in MTS – it backs up your decision instantly..
2. Rushing or Skipping Inspection Steps
We see this constantly in workshops – the diary’s full, the phone’s going, someone wants a “quick look”, and suddenly the routine gets shortened.
Skipping steps is one of the most common reasons testers ring us in a panic after a DVSA visit.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
Our MOT refresher sessions and QC visits are designed to rebuild discipline and routine, helping you get back to the DVSA-standard method instead of the workshop-standard shortcut.
✔ Pro-Tech tip: Follow the routine from start to finish. Every time. Pressure creates mistakes; structure prevents them.
3. Recording Vehicle Details Incorrectly
This is one we help garages with all the time.
Wrong reg. Wrong VIN. Wrong vehicle entirely.
And yes – DVSA can and do take action on it.
The biggest cause? Taking details from the job card.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
During compliance audits and MOT Assist calls, we reinforce the correct process and help testers understand how easily this can escalate into disciplinary action.
✔ Pro-Tech tip: Always take details from the vehicle itself. NEVER from a job card. And never use trade databases – we’ve seen them be wrong too many times.
4. Misusing (or rushing through) DVSA MOT Testing Service (MTS)
Data entry errors are one of the top reasons people contact us for help after a DVSA warning.
We see it over and over:
A tester skips an advisory.
Or clicks the wrong defect category.
Or doesn’t notice the MTS warning banner entirely.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
As part of MOT Assist, we talk testers through the Review Test screen, the meaning of different warnings, and how DVSA expects information to be recorded.
We also support Test Centre Managers in tightening up procedures so the whole team stays consistent.
✔ Pro-Tech tip: Treat the “Review Test” screen as your final QC check.
Take a breath. Go through it carefully.
It’s your name on that certificate.
5. Struggling with Defect Categorisation
This is easily one of the most common things testers ring us about.
Major or Dangerous?
Is it advisory or pass and advise?
Does this actually qualify as a defect?
Where Pro-Tech helps:
We deal with these questions daily.
When you’re part of MOT Assist, you can send us photos, videos, or explanations – and we’ll talk you through what the Manual actually says (not what someone in another garage once told you).
We also cover categorisation heavily in our Annual Training and CPD workshops.
✔ Pro-Tech tip: Use the Defect Categorisation Table. If you’re not 100% sure – check.
6. Letting Annual Training Slip
Every year, testers lose their licence simply because they leave their training and assessment too late.
It’s avoidable – but only if you stay ahead of it.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
We track deadlines for you.
We send reminders.
We support your training.
We help manage your CPD.
Many testers join MOT Assist for this reason alone – because one missed deadline can take your whole garage offline overnight.
✔ Pro-Tech Top Tip: Do your Annual Training early – ideally before Christmas. If something goes wrong (illness, system issues, failed attempts), you’ve still got months to put it right.
7. Incomplete or Missing QC Checks
DVSA inspectors expect to see evidence of ongoing QC – not just “we do it sometimes”.
But many garages don’t realise how often QC needs to be completed or what “good” actually looks like.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
We carry out independent QC checks, provide the right paperwork, and guide you on how to make the process consistent and easy to maintain.
Most garages discover they were missing key elements, until we help them put the right structure in place.
✔Pro-Tech Top Tip: Set a recurring calendar reminder for QC checks and treat it as non-negotiable. If you wait for a quiet week, it will never happen.
8. Not Understanding Turnplates vs Shaker Plates
We hear this constantly: “I’m one-man testing. I don’t need to use the turnplates.”
Unfortunately… you do.
Shaker plates replace the vigorous push/pull – nothing more.
The rest of the steering and suspension checks must still be done on turnplates.
Where Pro-Tech helps:
During practical MOT coaching and compliance visits, we demonstrate the correct process and show you exactly what DVSA will look for during a site observation.
✔Pro-Tech Top Tip:
Shaker plates = movement only.
Turnplates = feel, roughness, clearance, fouling.
If you skip turnplates, the check is incomplete and DVSA will spot it.
