You’ve built your experience on the tools, developed your technical knowledge, and perhaps already taken on extra responsibility within your workshop or MOT station. At some point, many technicians and testers start asking the same question: what’s the next step?
For many, that next step is moving into a Test Centre Manager role. It’s a progression that places you at the centre of MOT operations, compliance and standards and one that is becoming increasingly important as DVSA expectations continue to evolve.
At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, we regularly support technicians, testers and business owners as they make this move. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering progressing into Test Centre Management.

What Does a Test Centre Manager Do?
An MOT Test Centre Manager plays a key role in the safe, compliant and effective operation of a Vehicle Testing Station (VTS).
Responsibilities typically include:
- Overseeing day-to-day MOT testing operations
- Ensuring compliance with DVSA rules and scheme guidance
- Managing testers and supporting consistent testing standards
- Maintaining accurate records, security and audit trails
- Acting as the main point of contact with DVSA during site reviews, visits or investigations
It’s a role that combines technical understanding with leadership, organisation and accountability. Decisions made at management level directly affect testers, customers and the ongoing approval of the MOT station itself.
What Qualification Do You Need?
To move into this role, you’ll need to complete the Level 3 Technical Specialist in MOT Test Centre Management (Award).
This nationally recognised qualification is designed for:
- MOT Testers progressing into leadership or management roles
- Business owners running MOT test centres
- Managers responsible for compliance, processes and people
Importantly, this qualification is no longer just about progression – it is now mandatory in key areas of MOT operation.
- All new VTS authorisations must have at least one trained Authorised Examiner Principal (AEP) who holds the Level 3 Certificate
- Every VTS must appoint an Authorised Examiner Designated Manager (AEDM), and this role also requires the Level 3 Certificate, regardless of whether the individual carries out MOT tests
In practice, this means the Level 3 Award is an essential requirement for anyone taking responsibility for MOT compliance and oversight within a test centre.
What Does the Course Cover?
The Level 3 Technical Specialist in MOT Test Centre Management (Award) is typically completed over three days and includes taught content alongside an online assessment.
Key areas covered include:
- DVSA legislation and MOT scheme requirements
- Managing documentation, test security and records
- Quality Control processes and site reviews
- Handling complaints, issues and disciplinary matters
- Supporting testers and maintaining consistent standards
- Understanding the legal responsibilities of AEs, AEPs and AEDMs
This course is particularly valuable for those planning to open a new MOT station, take over responsibility for an existing site, or formalise their role within a growing business.
Why Progress into Test Centre Management?
Moving into a management role offers both professional development and long-term stability.
Many people choose this route to:
- Take on a more strategic role within the business
- Gain deeper understanding of compliance and risk management
- Support and mentor MOT testers more effectively
- Strengthen credibility for AE or business ownership roles
- Future-proof their career as DVSA scrutiny increases
Strong management is central to maintaining MOT standards, and DVSA expectations of those in charge continue to rise.
