If you’ve been working in the motor trade for a few years and are thinking about your next career move, becoming an MOT Tester is often a natural step. It’s a respected qualification, it brings more responsibility, and it puts you right at the heart of keeping vehicles and people safe on UK roads.
At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, this is a conversation we have every week. Many technicians know they want to become an MOT Tester, but aren’t always sure what’s involved, whether they’re eligible, or what DVSA will expect from them once they qualify.
So before you book onto a course, here’s what you need to know and how Pro-Tech can support you all the way through.

Who Can Apply?
To become an MOT Tester for cars and light vans (Class 4 & 7), the DVSA has clear entry requirements. You must:
- Hold a Level 3 qualification in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair, or have recognised equivalent experience.
- Have at least four years’ full-time experience servicing and repairing the class of vehicles you want to test. See our blog here on how to evidence this.
- Hold a full UK driving licence for the relevant vehicle class.
- Be of good repute, meaning no serious disciplinary history or unspent criminal convictions.
If you’re unsure whether your qualifications or experience meet the criteria, this is something that should be checked before enrolling.
This is an area where Pro-Tech can help early on – we’re always happy to talk through your background and make sure you’re taking the right route before committing to a course.
What Does the Course Involve?
To qualify as an MOT Tester, you must complete the Level 2 Technical Specialist in MOT Testing (Class 4 & 7) (Award). This is a DVSA-approved, nationally recognised qualification.
The course is delivered over a minimum of four full days, combining theory with hands-on practical work. During the course, you’ll learn how to:
- Navigate and apply the MOT Inspection Manual correctly
- Carry out vehicle checks to DVSA standards
- Identify, record and justify defects accurately
- Work safely in a test centre environment
- Communicate professionally with colleagues and customers
- Complete a full simulated MOT under assessment conditions
Assessment includes an online multiple-choice exam and a practical assessment to demonstrate competence.
At Pro-Tech, we keep class sizes deliberately small. On the practical days of the MOT Tester course, we operate a two-trainers-to-four-learners model, giving you the time, attention and confidence you need. All other courses are capped at 4-6 learners per trainer, because we believe quality learning matters more than numbers.

What Happens After the Course?
Once you’ve passed the Level 2 Award, the next step is the DVSA Demonstration Test. This takes place in your own workshop and involves a DVSA examiner observing you carry out a full MOT inspection.
If you pass, DVSA will authorise you as a live MOT Tester and add your details to the MOT Testing Service (MTS). From that point, you’re officially qualified and permitted to carry out MOT tests.
This stage can feel daunting, which is why preparation and confidence are key – something Pro-Tech actively supports as part of the wider journey.
Ongoing Responsibilities as an MOT Tester
Qualifying as an MOT Tester isn’t the end of the learning process. All testers are required to:
- Complete annual training and an online assessment between April and March each year
- Take part in regular Quality Control (QC) checks to ensure testing remains accurate and compliant
These requirements are essential to maintaining standards and protecting your DVSA authorisation. Understanding them early and building good habits from day one makes a huge difference.
