At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, our focus has always been on supporting the right people into MOT testing, with clarity, fairness and the right level of guidance from the very start.
You may have heard there has been a recent change around how eligibility for MOT Tester courses is evidenced, so we wanted to explain what this means in practice, how Pro-Tech now approaches this, and how we’ll support you through it.
Let’s start with the most important reassurance:
👉 The entry standard has not changed.
👉 This is a DVSA requirement, not a Pro-Tech decision.
What has changed is how experience must now be evidenced before training can take place.

What Has Changed (and What Hasn’t)
To be eligible for MOT Tester training, you must still have:
- A minimum of 4 years’ full-time experience, working with the class of vehicles you want to test
That requirement is exactly the same as it has always been.
What has changed, following the DVSA MOT Qualifications Assessment Strategy update issued on 15 December 2025, is the expectation that training providers apply more consistent and robust checks to confirm eligibility before a learner attends training.
This is now the approach that Pro-Tech applies as standard.
What Evidence Will Pro-Tech Ask For?
To confirm eligibility for MOT Tester training, DVSA now has clearer guidance on how employment history is evidenced. Their preferred option is the Gov.uk employment history service, as it provides a consistent record.
That said, we know this won’t work for everyone, and DVSA recognises that. If the Gov.uk route isn’t suitable, there are other acceptable ways to demonstrate your experience, and we’ll talk these through with you on an individual basis.
Our role is to make this straightforward. We’ll guide you through what’s needed, handle the compliance side, and make sure everything is recorded correctly.
If you’re unsure about anything, please speak to us before booking. We’re here to help you move forward with confidence.
Why Pro-Tech Supports This Approach
This change has been introduced to:
✔️ Raise standards
✔️ Improve consistency across the industry
✔️ Protect the credibility of MOT qualifications
As a training centre, Pro-Tech fully supports this direction. Clear eligibility checks help ensure that learners entering MOT testing are properly prepared for the responsibility the role carries and that those who should be eligible are supported correctly.
This isn’t about creating barriers. It’s about doing things properly, once, and with confidence.
What This Means for You
If you’re thinking about booking an MOT Tester course, the most important thing is talking to us early.
If you’re unsure:
- What evidence you have
- Whether your experience meets the requirement
- Or whether an alternative form of evidence may apply
👉 Please speak to us before booking.
