Choosing the Right MOT Training Provider: What to Look For?

Whether you’re taking your first step towards becoming an MOT Tester, looking to upskill with management training, or booking CPD for your team, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right MOT training provider.

At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, we often speak to people after they’ve had a poor training experience elsewhere – overcrowded courses, unclear guidance, or no support once the certificate is issued. Choosing the right provider from the outset makes all the difference.

So before you commit, here’s what to look for and how Pro-Tech supports you at every stage.

Accreditation & Industry Recognition

Start with the fundamentals. Any MOT training provider should be:

  • Accredited by a recognised awarding body (such as IMI or ABC Awards)
  • Delivering DVSA-approved qualifications
  • Transparent about their approvals and course outcomes

If accreditation information isn’t clearly available, ask the question.
If a provider can’t give you a clear answer – that’s a red flag.

At Pro-Tech, all of our MOT, EV, ADAS and management training is fully accredited and DVSA-aligned  and we’re always happy to explain exactly what each qualification does (and doesn’t) allow you to do. You can see more about our IMI approved MOT Courses here.

Experience of the Trainers

Training should be delivered by people who understand the real world of MOT testing, not just the theory.

Look for trainers who have:

  • Hands-on MOT testing experience
  • Workshop and garage backgrounds
  • Experience supporting DVSA standards, compliance or site reviews

Former testers, compliance specialists and DVSA-experienced trainers bring insight you simply can’t learn from a textbook, especially when it comes to preparing for your DVSA Demonstration Test or understanding what inspectors actually look for.

At Pro-Tech, our trainers bring that real-world experience into every session, helping learners feel prepared, not overwhelmed.

Hands-On, Real-World Training

MOT testing is practical so your training should be too!

Ask providers:

  • How much of the course is hands-on versus classroom-based?
  • Will you be working on up-to-date vehicles and equipment?
  • How many learners are on each course?

Smaller group sizes usually mean:

  • More time on the tools
  • More opportunity to ask questions
  • Better feedback and confidence-building

At Pro-Tech, we deliberately cap numbers. On the practical days of MOT Tester courses, we deliver a two-trainers-to-four-learners model. All other courses are capped at 4-6 learners per trainer, ensuring meaningful learning, not rushed delivery.

Support for Different Learning Needs

A good training provider should support every learner, not just the most confident or experienced.

If you have additional learning needs, for example dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or English as a second language, it’s important to ask:

“What support is available if I need extra help?”

That support might include:

  • Extended assessment time
  • One-to-one guidance
  • Visual or verbal learning aids
  • Accessible training materials
  • Quiet exam environments or rest breaks

At Pro-Tech, inclusive, person-centred training isn’t an add-on, it’s built into how we operate. We hold a suite of inclusion-focused accreditations, including Disability Confident, Dyslexia Friendly and Autism Inclusion, which reinforce our commitment to accessible, supportive learning for everyone.

More recently, Pro-Tech became a certified B Corporation, embedding diversity, equity and inclusion directly into our governance and decision-making. This means fairness, accessibility and learner support aren’t just current priorities, they’re protected principles that shape how we operate now and in the future.

If a provider seems unsure about how they support different learning styles, or treats it as an inconvenience, they’re probably not the right fit. At Pro-Tech, we believe that if you want to be taught by us, we’ll find a way to make it happen.

Aftercare & Ongoing Support

One of the biggest differences between training providers is what happens after the course.

The right provider should offer:

  • Support preparing for your DVSA Demonstration Test
  • Annual training and CPD options
  • Help with Quality Control, compliance or site reviews
  • A clear point of contact for future questions

At Pro-Tech, many learners stay in touch with us for years. Through MOT Assist, QC checks and ongoing support, we help testers and VTSs long after the course has finished.

You’re not just paying for a qualification, you’re investing in a relationship.

Accessibility & Flexibility

Training needs to work around real life.

Consider:

  • Location, travel time and parking
  • Accommodation options if you’re travelling
  • Whether group or on-site training is available for teams

Flexibility is particularly important for busy garages trying to minimise downtime.

At Pro-Tech, we offer a mix of in-centre, on-site and flexible delivery options wherever possible, helping individuals and teams access training without unnecessary disruption.

Reputation & Reviews

Finally, do your homework.

Look at:

  • Google reviews
  • Trustpilot
  • Social media feedback
  • Who the provider has trained previously

Testimonials and case studies tell you far more than a course description ever will.At Pro-Tech, we’re proud of our feedback and the long-standing relationships we’ve built with garages, councils, dealerships and independent testers across the UK. You can see our 5 star feedback through our TrustPilot reviews here.
